Do Interactive Exercise(s) About This Topic

1.      In pairs, practice coaching by having one person take 2 minutes to describe a current priority (a problem or exciting goal), and the other person practices asking questions for 13 minutes to help the other person to a) further clarify the priority, b) explore the context around the priority, c) identify relevant and realistic options to address the priority, and d) select an action that is realistic to take in the next 3-4 weeks. At the end of the 15 minutes, take 1 minute for the person who got coached, to share his or her key insights from the coaching.  After the first person is coached, then the other person gets coached for 15-16 minutes in the same way.

Whitmore’s book is often recommended as a “starter” book for those new to coaching because of its easy-to-read descriptions and easy-to-apply guidelines, tools and techniques.  The GROW model of coaching, described in the book, is widely presented during entry-level trainings about coaching.
